The 4th EU-China IPR Dialogue took place in Beijing from 2-3 April co-chaired by Ms Ewa Synowiec, Director, European Commission (Directorate-General for Trade) and Mr Shang Ming, Director General, Department of Treaty and Law of the Ministry of Commerce. - Specific IPR issues: trademarks (including the draft Trademark Law and protection of trademarks in retail markets); copyright (including on-line piracy); geographical indications; patents (including the draft Patent Law); designs and protection of designs at trade fairs; protection of innovation; and plant variety protection. - Civil, administrative and criminal IPR enforcement and customs actions. - Support reiterated for the IPR2 technical assistance project. - Preparation of the IPR issues to be addressed at the forthcoming High Level Economic and Trade Mechanism on 25 April, Beijing 2008. IPR2 supported the preparation of this Dialogue and will ensure that up and coming Project activities are in line with its joint conclusions. The EU-China Dialogue started in 2004 and enables both sides to exchange information on multilateral and bilateral IPR-related issues, on national IP legislation and practices, and to identify shortcomings and proposals for improvement. Partnership in Action “The most effective solution to effective IPR protection is the legal enforcement that mutual cooperation between the EU and China can and should provide. We need a shared sense of the damage [done] not just to European companies but to any company, and any economy, including China’s.” Mr. Peter Mandelson, (former) EU Commissioner for Trade, 26 November 2007 Beijing |
