25-26 March 2010, Beijing In the framework of IPR2, the Office for Harmonisation in the Internal Market (OHIM) together with China’s Trademark Office under the State Administration for Industry and Commerce (SAIC) organised a workshop on trademark classification practices in Europe and China. The workshop helped to identify issues for further development of China’s trademark classification system.
In the course of the two-day workshop, examination experts were part of an in-depth exchange of information and experience on the classification practices between the China Trade Mark Office (CTMO) of SAIC and OHIM. Furthermore, the workshop compared the respective practices for goods & services in opposition and cancellation procedures; and explained the respective processes of classification, including the tools used, the use of databases and search algorithms and presented case studies. Some 30 officials from CTMO of SAIC attended the workshop which was chaired by Ms Wu Jie, Director of the International Cooperation Department of SAIC and opened by Mr Jesus Romero, IP Officer (Trademarks and Designs) at the EU Delegation in Beijing. Other experts included Ms Yang Jianyu, Deputy Director of the Application Acceptance Division of CTMO, SAIC. The technical presentations and discussions focused on the following topics: - SAIC: Classification practice, including comparison goods & services in opposition/cancellation procedures (Description of process)
- OHIM: classification practice (description of process; tools used for this process, e.g. ACE report + EUROCLASS; Examples of cases)
- Comparison of goods & services in opposition/cancellation procedures under the Community Trademark (CTM) system (tools, e.g. similarity goods & services database; cases)
