IPR2 at World Expo 2010, Shanghai, 3-4 September 2010

IPR2 will be present at this year’s World Expo in Shanghai with activities dedicated to building awareness of the importance of IP protection and enforcement in contributing to the development of an innovative society. Hosted in the EU-Belgian Pavilion which has thematic displays representing ‘Intelligent Europe’, these activities will introduce the European trademark system to Chinese officials and industry and use a moot court setting to demonstrate how to protect and enforce intellectual property rights at trade fairs in Europe and China.

On 3 September, IPR2 and the European Union’s Office for Harmonisation in the Internal Market (Trademarks and Designs) with the support of the State Administration of Industry and Commerce of China will host ‘Introducing the European Community Trademark (CTM) system’. The seminar aims to raise awareness and build understanding of the EU’s IP property system related to trademarks in Europe, in particular for Chinese small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) who are potential trademark holders in the European market.

China and the European Union co-operate closely on trademark issues. In particular, exchanging best practice on the management of trademark processes with the aim of increasing the efficiency of trademark registration procedures and reducing the application-to-registration time for new trademark holders. This seminar will present information and experiences on the management and use of the European trademark system, including information on the status of protection and e-business tools for new users. It will also provide an opportunity for existing users to share their experience.

A second event on 4 September, ‘In Court - Protecting IP at Trade Fairs: Enforcement proceedings in a moot court setting’, to be opened by the President of the European Patent Office, Benoit Battistelli, the Ambassador of the EU to China, Serge Abou and the Commissioner of China’s State Intellectual Property Office (SIPO), will demonstrate enforcement proceedings in a ‘moot court’ for a real-world patent infringement case, in a context of critical importance to Chinese and European companies – an international trade fair. A moot court uses simulation and role-play to engage the different players involved in the case, and providing a unique opportunity to compare similarities and differences between the Chinese and European procedures and practices. The Chinese and European legal teams, comprising of a judge, counsel and experts, will apply the respective legal systems for protecting intellectual property at a trade fair in Europe and China.
