International Seminar on IP protection of software

IPR2 supported the implementation of two seminars aimed at enhancing the mutual understanding of intellectual property protection in the software and service outsourcing industry. Co-organised by the China Association of Trade in Services (CATIS), under the Ministry of Commerce (MOFCOM), both events aimed to build understanding on the challenges and means of improving the international competitiveness of enterprises and the overall development of this industry.
New IP Protection Roadmap - How to Register and Protect a Community Design

A new issue in the IPR2 series 'Roadmaps for Intellectual Property Protection' is available – How to Register and Protect a Community Design in Europe. A Community design is a right for the external appearance of a product or part of it, resulting from the features of the product itself and/or its ornamentation valid for all 27 Member States of the European Union and directly enforceable in all of these countries. This issue covers the term and scope of protection in Europe, the requirements for protection, the registration process and the key means (civil, administrative and criminal means) of enforcing a Community design.
The Roadmap series aims to provide information on the IP systems in China and Europe and to give guidance to both European and Chinese companies in protecting their IP. All issues are available to download free-of-charge at www.ipr2.org/roadmap.
Protecting copyrights on the internet: local authorities' efforts to tackle on-line piracy

Vice-Minister Yan Xiaohong from the National Copyright Administration of China (NCAC), Assistant Minister Chong Quan from the Ministry of Commerce (MOFCOM) and Mr Antoine Seillan, Counsellor of the EC Delegation to China were in Yingchuan today to open a seminar on-line piracy copyright protection and enforcement on the internet involving more than 80 officials from China’s local copyright authorities, cultural bureaus and judiciary. Together with leading local officials from Ningxia Province and Yinchuan Municipality, participants heard views from Chinese and European experts on the growing trends in on-line infringement of copyright and how to determine incidences of piracy, to process evidence, and build and handle piracy cases.
IPR2 in collaboration with the State Administration of Industry and Commerce (SAIC) held a workshop to compare procedures on the examination of trademarks, in particular ex officio relative grounds examination and relative grounds examination upon request. Three experts from the EU's Office for Harmonisation in the Internal Market (OHIM), UK Intellectual Property Office (UKIPO) and the Spanish Patent and Trademark Office (SPTO) covered the trademark examination system in the EU, the changes in the UK and Spain and provided a closer look at the Community Trademark system. The expert presentations led to a lively exchange of questions and answers with the audience; and helped to address a number of concerns and give the participants a better understanding of the potential changes to the existing trademark system in China.
International forum on implementation of the national IP strategy, symposium on trademark protection and revision of the Trademark Law

In co-operation with the State Administration of Industry and Commerce (SAIC), IPR2 helped to support an international forum on the implementation of China's National IP Strategy, in the context of its ongoing revision of the Trademark Law, and a trademark protection symposium looking at how Chongqing can further develop as a national model for IP protection.
