20 & 22 March 2011, Shanghai and Hangzhou IPR2, together with the General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspections and Quarantine of China (AQSIQ) continued to support EU-China co-operation on the protection of Geographical Indications (GIs) with a seminar for industry and a high-level conference in the presence of EU Commissioner for Agriculture and Rural Development, Dacian Cioloş, on GIs and appellations of origin as intangible assets of economic, rural and social development.
The seminar aimed to inform GI right holders about the respective GI protection systems in China and Europe, provided recommendations on how to approach the respective markets and how to use the different systems, including what to do before approaching the authorities, as well as addressing brand names in the Chinese language and transliteration issues. AQSIQ is the ministry-level administration in charge of national quality, certification, accreditation, exit-entry commodity inspection, standardisation, safety, quality of products and administrative law enforcement notably in GIs. As part of progressing EU-China negotiations on mutual GI recognition, IPR2 supported a public forum on the protection of GIs and appellation of origin in Chongqing in November 2009. Read more. In addition, published a study providing an overview of the legal framework and practical experience of protection of geographical indications in the EU and China. It examines the EC legislation on GIs protection and designations of origin for agricultural products and foodstuffs, wines and spirits and aims to present a comprehensive assessment of common principles and rules as well as of differences in approach on protection of geographical indications in the European Union and China.
